Lake Ślesińskie – between natural charm and summer chaos

Ślesin seems like an ideal spot for those seeking a connection with nature, who love walking or cycling among the trees, and who prefer birdsong in the evenings over club music.

But like many beautiful places, Ślesin transforms in the summer – and not everyone will enjoy that change.

Nature, peace, and space – Ślesin’s biggest assets

The greatest treasure of Ślesin is undoubtedly its natural surroundings. Lake Ślesińskie is a long, relatively clean body of water, perfect for paddleboarding, inflatables, water bikes, light sailing – or simply relaxing by the water. Surrounding it are fragrant pine forests with a charming network of trails, inviting peaceful strolls or family cycling trips. Most of the routes are well-surfaced, safe even for young children, and lead through lush, scenic areas full of birdsong and cool shade on hot days.

Within these woods lies a tent camping field, which, despite being close to the beach, offers far more peace and contact with nature than the town center. The price is a flat 80 PLN per night for a camper or trailer, regardless of the number of people (data from 2025) – quite reasonable for a lakeside location with infrastructure. Right next to it is a large, modern playground – a place kids will instantly love. Swings, slides, a zip line, climbing frames, and plenty of space to run – perfect for letting kids go wild while parents catch a breath.

On warm days, mini salt graduation towers add a nice touch – they offer refreshing coolness and support respiratory health. It’s a welcome bonus after a long walk or bike ride. Importantly, portable toilets and numerous trash bins are available around the lake, helping the area remain clean and friendly even with higher tourist numbers (though always with a few exceptions).

A natural curiosity – an unexpected “waterfall” from the hydro plant

One of the more unusual sights in Ślesin is the hydroelectric plant, which occasionally releases excess water into the canal. For unsuspecting passersby, it can be quite a spectacle – a powerful jet of water crashing into the lake, looking like a mini waterfall. It’s all very impressive, but catching it in action requires luck, as there’s no schedule or announcement when it happens.

The main beach – wide, well-organized... but unbearably loud

Ślesin has a wide sandy beach that draws crowds in summer. There’s a long pier with benches, plenty of space for towels and loungers, and the beach itself is well-maintained. Infrastructure is solid – showers, water gear rentals, changing rooms, and toilets. Unfortunately, what’s a benefit to some is a curse to others.

In peak season (mid-June to late August), the beach buzzes with activity – day and night. Evening parties, loud music, and no peace at night are the norm. Bass thumping until morning, echoing through the woods, crowds of people, drunk partygoers, roaring "broken" mufflers, and overall noise make it a poor destination for those seeking relaxation and nature. If that’s your goal – avoid summer weekends.

Food scene – fast food overload with few exceptions

As for food – the beach area is mostly filled with seasonal stalls serving low-quality fast food: kebabs, burgers, fries, baguette pizzas. Occasionally, you’ll find a decent place, but more often it’s about drowning blandness in sauce and seasoning. Don't expect much taste or quality – and prices can be absurd (a medium margherita pizza starts at 55 PLN, ice cream at 7–10 PLN per scoop).

If you want better food, head away from the beach zone. In the quieter parts of Ślesin, there are a few decent eateries and well-stocked grocery stores – including Dino, Biedronka, and Żabka – where you can prepare something better yourself.

One real highlight is the ice cream shop “Beza Krówka” – a hit on hot days. Delicious, natural ice cream, honest portions, and a nice atmosphere make it one of the few local food spots truly worth visiting.

When to come to truly relax?

From my experience – if you really want to unwind, feel nature, sit quietly by the water, and breathe in the forest – come before mid-May, before the crowds arrive, or after September, when the season ends but the weather can still be pleasant. Autumn in Ślesin can be stunning – colorful leaves, morning mists over the lake, and a quiet that lets you truly recharge.

Parking

Ślesin has many parking options – prices range from 5 PLN per hour to 50 PLN per day. There are also free ones. However, entering the beach zone costs a one-time 20 PLN fee. Though, even that isn’t consistent – sometimes it’s charged, sometimes not, just like the entrance gates.

Summary

Ślesin is a place of contrasts. On one hand, it offers the holiday basics: nature, water, forest, walking paths, peace (outside of peak season), and a simple camping vibe. On the other – in summer, it turns into a noisy entertainment center with overpriced fast food and no silence. It’s worth visiting – but only if you know what you’re looking for. If your dream evening involves bird calls instead of techno beats – come off-season. That’s when Ślesin reveals its most beautiful, natural side.
