The Tram That Goes... Up

You’ve probably seen it in photos – a tiny old tram covered in graffiti climbing a narrow street. That’s Elevador da Glória – officially a funicular, but it looks and feels like a tram. It connects Praça dos Restauradores to the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint.

It’s more of a tourist experience than real transport – a one-way ticket costs around €4, or you can ride it with the 24-hour public transport pass (€6.60). The ride is super short though – less than 2 minutes. For a real Lisbon tram adventure, you’ll want something longer...

The Legendary Tram 28

This is the classic Lisbon experience. Tram 28E runs from Martim Moniz to Campo de Ourique, twisting through historic districts like Alfama, Graça, Baixa and Estrela. The full ride takes about 45 minutes and feels like a sightseeing tour on rails.

A single ticket on board costs €3, but again – the 24-hour pass is your best bet. It covers all trams, metros, elevators and more.

Pro tip: Tram 28 is popular. To avoid the crowds, go early in the morning or start from a less touristy stop like Campo de Ourique. And yes – it’s way more rewarding than the short uphill funicular ride.
