Mount Etna – volcanic adventure

Mount Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe and one of Sicily's most impressive natural wonders. A must-see for hikers and nature lovers.

About Mount Etna

Located on Sicily's east coast, Mount Etna rises to over 3300 meters. Visitors are rewarded with stunning views, craters, and dramatic lava fields.

Getting there & trails

The main starting point is Rifugio Sapienza (1900 m), where you'll find parking, a cable car, and trailheads. From there, you can hike to Torre del Filosofo (around 2900 m). The trail is not difficult, although volcanic gravel can be slippery. The hike takes around 1.5–2 hours and is more rewarding than taking the cable car.

Cable car and bus

The Funivia dell'Etna cable car takes you up to 2500 m for about €50 (round trip). From there, off-road buses continue higher (additional €38–50). The cable car is open daily from 08:30 to 16:10 (last descent). In summer and high season, it is best to arrive around 08:00 for good weather and smaller crowds.

Weather conditions

Snow is common on Etna, even in late spring. Visibility at the summit can be poor due to clouds. Always check the forecast before you go – some paths may be closed in bad weather.

Lava-scarred buildings

On the way to the parking area, you'll pass buildings that were buried in lava during past eruptions. Some are still covered in magma, offering a dramatic reminder of Etna's power.

Camping and lodging

There are several well-equipped campsites near Etna (like Camping Etna), with spots for motorhomes, trailers, tents, and cabins. Some offer shuttle services to Rifugio Sapienza for an extra fee – ideal for those without a car.

Access to the summit

To reach the actual summit of Etna, you must be accompanied by a licensed guide and wear a safety helmet. Some hikers try to reach it independently, avoiding guides and checkpoints, but this is not recommended due to safety and legal concerns.

Conclusion

Whether you hike or ride to the top, Etna promises an unforgettable adventure in one of Europe's most fascinating landscapes.
